Learn More About Your Land Rover Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

Whether you love the easy transitions that an automatic transmission provides or you enjoy the thrill that comes with a manual transmission, you'll want to make sure that your transmission is well taken care of. Transmissions require routine maintenance and repairs and shouldn't be forgotten about or pushed aside.

What Is A Transmission?

The transmission is designed to adjust the gear ratio between the drive wheels and engine as you slow down or speed up. There are two different types of transmissions, manual and automatic. The manual transmission requires the driver to change gears with a clutch, while the automatic transmission does the transition for you.

Four Common Transmission Services

Whether your Land Rover contains an automatic or manual transmission, there is a common transmission service that you'll want to pay attention to. The four most common transmission services are:

1) Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange

Recommended to be done every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, an automatic transmission fluid flush is essential to your vehicle. The transmission fluid runs through your transmission, lubricating the different parts and gears. Due to the heat and friction it endures, this viscous fluid will break down over time. Leaving it unchanged will result in a larger transmission fix.

What is the automatic transmission fluid exchange process? First, the drain plug is removed and inspected. Then the fluid is drained and refilled with new transmission fluid. Finally, the drain plug is reinstalled.

2) Automatic Transmission Filter And Fluid Replacement

Every transmission also has a filter that catches debris and dirt found in the transmission fluid. This filter may need to be replaced as well as it will become dirty and incapable of doing its job properly.

What is the automatic transmission filter and fluid replacement process? First, the transmission pan is removed, and the dirty filter is replaced with a brand-new one. Then the gasket material is removed and replaced. The transmission pan is then reinstalled, and a transmission fluid exchange is performed.

3) Manual Transmission Service

Recommended to be done every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, a manual transmission service adds one more piece to the fluid flush: the clutch. The clutch is an important part of any stick shift and will need to be maintained and replaced over time.

What is the manual transmission service process? First, the fluid is drained and evacuated from the entire system, with special attention to the clutch. Then, new transmission fluid is added, the transmission plug is inspected and replaced, and the clutch is inspected for damage.

4) Complete Transmission Service

Available on either an automatic or manual transmission, a complete transmission service covers every part of your transmission. A comprehensive transmission service includes:

  • Transmission fluid replacement
  • Transmission filter replacement
  • Transmission sump and pan inspection
  • Transmission pan cleaning and material replacement (if needed)
  • Clutch inspection (if applicable)
  • Inspection for friction damage or metal particles

When Does My Clutch Need To Be Replaced?

There are multiple signs that show when your clutch needs to be repaired or replaced. Have you noticed any odd noises when you shift? Does it feel harder to accelerate? Is the clutch spongy or sticky? If any of these are the case, contact a service center and have them take a closer look at your clutch.
